Virginia Tech Giving Day 2022
Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute

Every day, scientists at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute address the most challenging health issues that face children and adults, including veterans, across the lifespan. The research institute integrates life sciences with physical, engineering, behavioral, computational, and social sciences to develop new approaches to major health disorders. In the process, the research institute becomes a living laboratory for experiential learning and discovery for scholars at all levels, whether students are in high school, embarking on their undergraduate educations, completing graduate or medical degrees, or immersed in postdoctoral study.

Through the coordinated efforts of experts in brain science, cardiac science, virology, and regenerative medicine — and the use of sophisticated tools that allow analysis at molecular, cellular, and whole organism levels — VTCRI faculty members are electrifying scientific conversation around the globe. Our scientists are making discoveries at the lab bench that translate into bedside breakthroughs to benefit patients and increase our understanding of the body’s biological processes in health and disease.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Michael J. Friedlander, Ph.D., our facility is at capacity with 25 research teams and 300 employees working to protect brain and cardiovascular health and solve infectious diseases. Those efforts make a $400 million annual economic impact. And there’s more to come. An additional research facility that will house another 25 new research teams is under construction and set to be completed in 2020.

We need your help. Your gift will directly benefit research to solve health problems across the world. Your generosity produces new ideas and innovations and helps create a hopeful, vital future.
