Our researchers, staff, and students bring their passion and knowledge to work every day to address some of the most pressing challenges facing human health right now - including the pandemic.
Gifts of all amounts help us accelerate the pace of new discoveries to help patients with cancer, neurological and behavioral disorders, heart disease, and even rare genetic disorders. Private donations fast-track our progress and allow us to invest in the finest instrumentation and recruit world-class scientists to join our growing roster at Virginia Tech.
In the past year, we built our Molecular Diagnostics Lab operations from the ground up to expand COVID-19 testing across the state, meeting a critical need to help monitor and mitigate the virus’s spread through tracking and data-informed policies. Our researchers have made strides in understanding how chronic jet lag accelerates tumor growth on a cellular scale, and are working to commercialize new therapeutics targeting glioblastoma and breast cancer, as well as heart disease.
In a first-of-its-kind awake human brain study, our scientists were able to precisely measure the release of key neuromodulatory molecules that play critical roles in human mood, emotion, decision-making, and memory as well as in neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as major depression. Our neuromotor research clinic has applied cutting-edge, effective neurorehabilitation therapies for children with cerebral palsy to also help children with a rare genetic disorder that affects brain development.
These are just a few of our key achievements from the past year, and this is just the beginning. You have the chance to play a pivotal role in our future success and expansion. Looking ahead, we’re opening laboratories in Washington, D.C. this summer, through a new partnership with Children’s National Hospital, ranked among the top 10 best children’s hospital in the U.S., to study and develop innovative diagnostics and treatments for aggressive forms of brain cancer in children.
