Coach Jim Thompson took the reigns as Head Coach in 1998 and had immediate success with back-to-back A-10 titles. The program made occasional appearance at the NCAA tournament, appearing in three tournaments during the first eight seasons. The transition to the BigEast kept the Hokies moving in the right direction, competing against nationally ranked opponents.
Once Tech joined the ACC, a conference with the likes of Duke, Wake Forest, and North Carolina it helped bolster the yearly schedule and kept the Hokies playing on a national stage week in and week out. The Hokies continued to gain traction and quickly became regulars at the NCAA tournament, having earned bids to 11 of the last 12 NCAA tournaments. In addition, the Hokies have sent individuals to the singles tournament 10 of the past 11 seasons; highlighted by Joao Monteiro advancing to the final four in 2016, earning All-American honors.
YOUR support on Drive for 25 Day will continue to help the Hokies move forward in making the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center a premier venue in the league and in the nation. Renovations to the pre-existing structure will re-establish this facility as one of the best in college tennis and allow the program to bring in top talent from around the world. Upgrades include locker rooms, coaches offices, a players’ lounge/study area, and new court, which when completed, will bring our facility in line with those at other ACC institutions.
