Advance social science research that enhances lives locally and across the globe

The Institute for Society, Culture and Environment (ISCE) enhances Virginia Tech’s capacity and status in the social sciences by advancing innovative, interdisciplinary, and translational research that addresses critical concerns impacting people and places around the world.  

ISCE strategically invests in social and behavioral research that has the potential for external funding by providing financial and technical assistance that supports individual faculty development while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration through initiatives like the Preparing your Research for Extramural Funding and ISCE Scholars programs. 

By championing the fundamental role that the social sciences play in society, ISCE supports Virginia Tech’s broad community of faculty whose research addresses today’s contemporary social problems through meaningful, people-centered solutions.  

This Giving Day you can champion the social sciences by supporting ISCE broadly or giving to one of three key areas:  

The Center for Communicating Science bridges the gap between researchers and communities—using the arts to help scientists listen, connect, and inspire. Your gift supports:

  • Workshops for early career researchers
  • Artist-scientist collaborations
  • Graduate student outreach tours  

The Virginia Tech Center for Public Health Practice and Research partners with faculty, staff, and students at Virginia Tech and community members and organizations to improve health in the region, across Virginia, and beyond. Your gift supports:

  • Community-based projects and research
  • Student professional development opportunities
  • Development and dissemination of evidence-based public health practice models  

The Whole Health Consortium brings together researchers, clinicians, faculty, students, and community partners to develop practical approaches that improve everyday health and access to care. Your gift supports:

  • Seed grants that launch pilot studies with direct community and clinical relevance
  • Research and networking events that connect clinicians, researchers, and community partners to work together on health research and solutions
  • Shared tools and supports that turn research evidence into everyday health solutions
