Institute for Critical Tech and Applied Science
Support critical research

The Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) provides unique capabilities, facilities, and support for more than 400 faculty and 200 students from six colleges, supporting interdisciplinary research.

Three areas of impact that can be positively impacted by donations:

The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab

Since 2011, Virginia Tech researchers have been providing unbiased helmet ratings that allow consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing helmets for sports and other activities. The lab’s helmet ratings are the culmination of over 15 years of research on head impacts in sports and identify which helmets best reduce concussion risk. This work is done as part of Virginia Tech’s service mission and is 100% independent of any funding or influence from helmet manufacturers.

Mid Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP)

MAAP takes on the most pressing technical and operational challenges in Unmanned Aircraft Systems integration. They lead Virginia’s BEYOND team and other major federal UAS-integration efforts, and our work has consistently led to landmark permissions and operations that have advanced the industry. MAAP works with the FAA, federal agencies, and leading companies on fundamental research and advanced testing, bridging industry goals and regulatory priorities to develop practical, powerful, evidence-based solutions that set new precedents and lay the groundwork for expanded operations. MAAP is actively engaged in the development of industry standards, using data and insights drawn to shape the framework that will support the evolution of this technology towards its tremendous potential.

ICTAS Annual Scholarship

The ICTAS Annual Scholarship is an unrestricted scholarship awarded to undergraduate or graduate students.

Giving to Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab, Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership, and ICTAS Annual Scholarship supports research and scholarship that makes an impact on advancing safety and innovation across multiple disciplines.
